Our Firefighter Visit

Today Miss Pauley invited us to Room E7 to meet a real life superhero.   We met Ella's Grandad.   Ella’s Grandad is called Glen.
Glen is a firefighter and he helps keep our community safe.

Glen talked to us about his job.   We were super star listeners.  Glen showed us what Firefighters wear when they fight fires.

Firefighters wear a special suit. The suit protects their body from the burning flames.  Glen got dressed into his firefighter uniform for us.

We felt the Firefighter jacket.  It was heavy and thick.

Firefighters wear a protective hood.

Firefighters wear a strong helmet and strong boots that protect their head and feet from being burned or crushed by something heavy.

Firefighters wear a special mask over their face.  It is attached to an oxygen tank that they wear on their backs.

Firefighters need an oxygen tank full of fresh air when they go inside a burning building.  The fresh air flows through a tube and into their face mask when they breathe in.

We learned that Firefighters need fresh air inside a burning building because the smoke can be very dangerous and poisonous.

Firefighters need to keep themselves safe so that they can help keep others safe!

Glen put on his special gloves last.  The gloves protect his hands from the flames and from things that the fire has made very very hot.

Glen showed us how he breathes the air through his mask.
It was very noisy and it gave us a bit of a fright.

But...
Glen told us that if we are ever stuck in a fire and we hear that noise, we know it is a good noise because it means a firefighter is coming to help us!

We were so lucky to meet a real superhero that helps keep us safe in Lower Hutt!

Thank you Glen the Firefighter for showing us your special uniform that you wear to help you do your job safely.
