Making Marshmallow Sandwiches

We have been learning about heat.  We have been thinking about how heat can change things.

Today we did an experiment.  We made some yummy marshmallow sandwiches.  We looked at Mrs Harrington's class blog and saw the children in B4 making them.  We thought it would be a tasty thing to try for ourselves.

You can check out the B4 Explorers blogpost and "Marshmallow Sandwich" recipe by clicking here:

First we put  B4's Blog Post up on the projector screen in our classroom so that we could read the instructions for making Marshmallow Sandwiches.

What did we need to make
Marshmallow Biscuits?

Marshmallows.
Chocolate Thin Biscuits.
A plate.

We wondered what would happen to the marshmallow and chocolate biscuits when we heated them up in the microwave.

What did we predict would happen?

"I think the marshmallow will rise up high."  - Ashton.
"The marshmallow might go runny and goey." - Sylvia.
"I think the pink marshmallows will change to white." - Taylor.
"I think that it will take 2 hours to get hot." - Sriraj.
"The marshmallow will melt and be very hot." - Eva.

Next we made our Marshmallow Biscuits!  We had to squish a marshmallow down in between 2 chocolate thin biscuits.  We had to make sure the chocolate was on the inside of our 'sandwich'.

Yum!

It was a bit tricky because the biscuits on the top kept falling off.
We wondered if we needed smaller marshmallows so we cut them in half.

We put them in the microwave for 20 seconds

All ready to be heated up!

We all counted to 20 while we waited!

When the Marshmallow Sandwiches came out of the microwave we had a look at them to see if they had changed.

We decided that after the marshmallows had been heated up they looked puffy and fat.  They looked gooey and runny.

What else had changed?
The chocolate had changed too!  It was gooey and sticky.

Finally we got to eat them our yummy marshmallow biscuits.  We had to let them cool down a little bit so that the marshmallow didn't burn our tongues!
"The marshmallow is stretching," said Joshua.
"It looks like chewing gum!" said Anika.
"My marshmallow looks all stringy!" said Ashton.
"Mrs Graham look! Sticky Marshmallow!" said Jerry.
"It tastes so warm and yummy" said Natey.
"It tastes different. I can lick the chocolate off" said Rohan.
"My Marshmallow has gone all flat" said Charlotte.

Yum! Yum! Yum!

You might like to try making these at home.
Remember to get a big person to help you - and be careful! Remember the hot marshmallow can burn.

E6 Super Scientists

During the month of May schools across New Zealand have been celebrating teaching and learning in science.

We brought some science experiments to school to share with each other.  Some of us brought some interesting objects to explore and observe!

We examined a butterfly wing, and a pre-historic shark tooth fossil.
We made rocket balloons, lava lamps, exploding volcanoes, and more.

Come and watch us being super scientists!

Music With Mrs Campbell

Today was a special day in E6.  We went to the hall to do some music with our school Music Teacher.  Mrs Campbell gave us some clave sticks.  We got to tap them to the beat of the music.

We tapped them on the floor.
We tapped them on our feet.
We tapped them together in the air.
We tapped them together, end to end.
 We tapped them together fast.
TWe tapped them together very slowly.

Our excellent learner in E6

Each Term at Eastern Hutt School Mrs Henderson (our school principal) gives out a very special award to one person from every class at our school.  This award is for somebody that shows excellence in all that they do.  That means that we give our very very best, always.

Our excellent learner in E6 during Term One is ... Taylor

Taylor always gives her very very best.
She uses beautiful manners and always sits tidy on the mat.
Taylor is clever at having a go.
(even if she is unsure she tries things out)
We think Taylor is a fabulous friend in E6.
She cares about us and always asks us to play with her.
Taylor tries to cheer us up by saying really kind things.
Taylor always listens carefully to instructions.
You should read her superstar writing - her stories are really interesting.
Taylor is excellent at using capital letters at the start of her sentences and always remembers a full stop!

Mrs Henderson came to our Jolly Juniors Assembly today.  She gave out the certificates.  We all clapped for Taylor and the other students.

Taylor got to shake Mrs Henderson's hand!

Tino Pai Taylor, well done!

We think you deserve
Mrs Henderson's special award and we are proud of you!
